September has quickly come around and, after this summer’s heatwave, it definitely feels like autumn is well and truly on its way. As everyone knows (because we’ve not stopped banging on about it) the weather has been bloody fantastic here in the UK. Personally I’m not great with heat and was feeling pretty thankful I’m located in the north east where we had some lovely, but bearable, temperatures. This post sums up those great products and new items that have got me through this glorious summer, along with a few great days out which I had along the way.
Now I’m all for less makeup in the summer, no one wants a heavy coverage foundation melting off their face before you’ve even got to work. But…I still like to wear some sort of light coverage foundation or BB cream, that’s where the Urban Decay All Nighter comes in handy. I recently finished my first full size bottle of this long lasting setting spray and just had to buy a replacement. This stuff is seriously good. If you’ve got oily skin like me, I promise you it will keep your make up on all day, or stop it from sweating off in the summer heat. It’s definitely my favourite setting spray that I’ve tried, plus it comes in handy travel sizes too (as photographed).
Next up it’s another make-up product, waterproof mascara. In particular L’Oréal’s Paradise Mascara Waterproof. The standard one is great and my usual choice, but I was finding it pretty smudged after a long day in the office and needed something sweat and oil proof! I know many people find waterproof mascaras a pain to remove, but get some great cleansing balm and it’s a doddle. For reference I use Clinique’s Take The Day Off or Lush’s Ultrabland.
Moving on to something incredibly important, sun cream! I turned 26 this year and the fear of getting wrinkles suddenly seems quite real for me. Even before the heatwave I was slathering factor 50 on my face daily. The Skin Defence SPF from the Body Shop is great, it feels so lightweight and blends in almost like a gel without leaving a white cast on your skin. Protecting your skin from the sun is so so SO important. It can take a bit of trial and error to find one that works with you but it’s definitely worth the effort and then you’ll actually want to apply it every day!
Now for a bit of clothing. I have been living in plisse culottes from Primark (when I’m not in the office). I have three pairs, black, polka dot and a lovely botanical print. They cost £13 and are just so comfy. They were an easy outfit to throw on with a cute T shirt and sandals or trainers and I fully intend to keep wearing them until my ankles can’t take the cold anymore. When I did fancy a change and wanted to wear skirts or dresses I knew I could comfortable with my trusty black cycle shorts. Now, let’s be real here. You can be any size and the dreaded chub rub can get you. I’ve tried a few creams and gels but to be honest they don’t work for me, it’s temporary relief but then my thighs will start to rub together again (because they love each other so much) and I find it a pain having to reapply when you’re out and about having fun. Plus I like the added bum/ knicker coverage of cycle shorts, especially useful when a pesky gust of wind surprises you. You can buy cycle shorts in so many places and they’re pretty inexpensive but my favourites are from Pretty Little Thing.
All of these were put to the test on numerous weekend day trips, BBQ’s and just lounging in the park. So here’s a brief photographic roundup of some of the lovely places I visited over the past couple of months (whilst wearing my sun cream, waterproof mascara, setting spray and culottes of course).
